A guide on how to set up and use Bixby routines on Samsung Galaxy devices

Samsung is taking over Google Assistant with the digital assistant Bixby on mobile devices, smart TVs and Tizen-powered smartwatches. Not only does Bixby focus on answering user questions, it also handles the offline tasks on the phone. Samsung has a neat Bixby Routine add-on that performs multiple functions on the device based on voice commands.

What is a Bixby routine?

Samsung’s Bixby routines are your predefined rules that are triggered when a certain phrase or command is said to the digital assistant. It follows the ‘If This Then That’ format of things.

Bixby takes the actions based on your preferences using rules or commands. For example, you can set Bixby to share your calendar events every morning or show them when you ask for them. Read on to learn how to set it up.

Where’s Bixby Routines?

Bixby Routines is part of Bixby’s digital assistant. It can be accessed from the Bixby start menu. Long press the power button on your phone to activate the Bixby assistant.

In the bottom menu, tap the little home icon and the Bixby main menu will open. Now tap the hamburger menu in the top left and choose Quick Commands from the menu below.

Quick commands

By default, Bixby offers several ready-to-use Bixby commands. You can either use them and edit tasks or create them from scratch. Here we are creating a Bixby command from the main screen and adding tasks based on our settings.

Create a Bixby command

Now that you know what the Bixby command is and how to access it, let’s create a Bixby routine.

Step 1: Go to the Bixby homepage and open Quick Commands.

Step 2: Tap the + icon in the top right corner.

In the main menu, you will see the final Bixby phrase and the actions associated with it. You can tap the x sign at any time and remove commands or change the command position.

Save routine

To the example, you want Bixby to announce the time first, and then the schedule, email, and weather announcement. Drag and drop the “What time is it” command up and you can start with the Save button below.

Go back to the home screen. Wake up Bixby with the side button or with the voice command “Hey Bixby”. Say the command “What’s up” and Bixby will take action based on your set commands. Take a look at the screenshots and you will see Bixby in action, with the current time, schedule for the coming day, Gmail and the latest weather details.
