Apple has announced a new program called Self Service Repair that allows iPhone 12 and 13 owners to get genuine Apple parts, tools, and manuals so they can repair their own devices without taking them to Apple or any other third-party repair location.
What are “Right to Repair” laws and what do they mean to you?
“By providing better access to genuine Apple parts, our customers have even more choice when a repair is needed,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training, and now we have an option for those who want to do their own repairs.”
Apple intends to roll out the display, battery, and camera repair options on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 devices as these are the most common parts of the phone that need to be repaired. However, the company will introduce additional repairs in 2022.
According to Apple, the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store will offer more than 200 individual parts and tools.
The company notes that while most customers offer this option, they want to take their equipment to a professional for repair. “Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians who have the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians using genuine Apple parts is the safest, most reliable way to get a repair, ”the company said on a blog post.
If you are confident that you can fix your own phone, this is a great announcement as Apple is actually making the process easier instead of trying to stop you.
