Enable top panel auto-hide on Ubuntu 20.04 Gnome desktop

The Gnome top bar can be automatically hidden via the Gnome Shell extension, similar to the left dock panel.

On Ubuntu 18.04, you can enable this feature by simply installing the gnome shell extension from Ubuntu software.

On Ubuntu 20.04, it’s easy to install hide top bar However, software utilities do not handle extension packages.

1.) Press Ctrl + Alt + T on your keyboard to open a terminal. Then run the apt command to install the extension.

sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-autohidetopbar

Enter the user password for the sudo prompt (without asterisk feedback) and press Enter.

2.) Once installed, press Alt + F2 to restart the Gnome shell, type r in the Run Command box in the popup and press Enter.

3.) Finally, open the extension or Gnome Tweaks (both can be software installed) and enable the “Hide Top Bar” extension.
