With the latest version of Google Maps for iPhone and iPad, you can share your location with friends, get traffic information faster, and even access a dark mode from within the popular navigation app on your iPhone.
Google Maps gets real-time location sharing on iPhone
Google revealed that you can share your live location through iMessage and it seems easy enough to get started. If you are on your way to a friend’s house and they are wondering where you are, share your progress on your journey.
To access this feature, you need to tap the Google Maps button in iMessage. A preview will appear from there letting you know how long your location will be shared. From there, tap the Send button and your friends will be able to follow you.
By default, Google shares your location for an hour, but you can share it for up to three days – all you have to do is increase it manually. If you want to stop sharing your location, you can tap the Stop button.
Other new Google Maps functions
Google wasn’t happy with introducing a new feature for Maps. Instead, the company has also added some useful widgets.
First, the company added a widget that shows you the traffic in your immediate area. Google also added a new Google Maps search widget that lets you either type in what you’re looking for or tap a button to see nearby restaurants, gas stations, your home, or work.
To use these, you’ll need to add the Google Maps widget (here’s how to add a widget on your iPhone or iPad) to your home screen, then choose which one to add. (Or you can add both!)
This feature and live location sharing are now rolling out, although at the time of writing we weren’t able to access any of the features
The last addition to Google Maps is a dark mode, which is a matter of course for many apps these days. This will begin in the coming weeks, so we’ll have to wait a little longer before we can rest our eyes with the soothing dark Google Maps look.
