GNOME Image Viewer and Organizer gThumb released version 3.11.3 a few days ago. To install on Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.10 via PPA:
gThumb 3.11.3 adds support for JPEG XL, the next-generation image coding standard.
JPEG XL (.jxl) Based on Google’s Pik format and Cloudinary’s FUIF format ideas. This is the next generation general purpose image compression codec by the JPEG Commission. Some popular apps such as ImageMagick and XnView MP have already added support for image formats.
gThumb now opens .jxl image formats via the libjxl library.
Other changes in the release are:
- Added a file action to the viewer context menu.
- Removed Facebook and picasa web uploaders
- Fixed an issue where images would be continuously reloaded if there were only images in the folder
- Webp can also be transparent.
- New and updated translations.

Note on Ubuntu 21.04: There seems to be a bug (unknown) in libjxl when building against Clang 11.0.1. As a result, the 21.04 gThumb package was built without JPEG XL support.
