How to Capture Mac Window Screenshots Without Shadows

When you take a screenshot of a window on your Mac, the shadow of the window is also captured. It looks great, but it might not be ideal if you’re sharing the screenshot online or for work. How to turn off screenshot shadow on your Mac.

There are two ways to turn off this window shadow. You can do this per screenshot with a special keyboard shortcut, or you can use a Terminal command to turn off the shadows on all window screenshots in the future.

Disable the window shadow in screenshots with a keyboard shortcut

If you want to remove the window shadow from a particular screenshot, you can use a different type of shortcut when taking a screenshot.

To take a screenshot of a window, first use the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + 4. The cursor will now turn into a crosshair. Hover over the window you want to capture and press the spacebar.


The window is selected. Now hold down the Option key when you press the left mouse button to take the screenshot.

If you go to your desktop (or wherever you save screenshots) you will find that the screenshot has no shadow!

Turn off shadows for all window screenshots on Mac

Don’t want to use the Option key every time you take a window screenshot? You can use a Terminal command to turn off the shadows for any window screenshots taken on your Mac.

To do this, first open the Terminal app. You can do this with Spotlight Search by pressing Cmd + Space. You can also find it on the launchpad.

After opening Terminal, paste the following line and then press Enter /Enter Key.

defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true

This deactivates the window shadow function. Paste the following line to save the setting and press Enter /Enter Key.

killall SystemUIServer

And that’s it. Your window screenshots no longer have a shadow!


If you want to undo this change in the future, use the following lines of code.

defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool false

killall SystemUIServer
