How to change notification tones on Android

Notifications on Android are an important part of the smartphone experience, and the sounds that come with them are just as important. Listening to notification tones all day can help make them sound better too. That’s how it’s done.

Thankfully, it’s super easy to change notification tones on Android devices. Each phone or tablet comes with its own default tones, but you don’t have to use them. There are always a handful of sounds to choose from.

What are Android notification channels?

First, swipe down from the top of the screen once or twice and tap the gear icon to open the settings menu.

Look in Settings for something like “Sound” or “Sound & Vibration”. The name of the section differs depending on the Android version and device manufacturer.

Next, look for “Notification Sound” or “Default Notification Sound”. You may need to expand an Advanced section to find the option.

You will now see a list of notification tones to choose from. When you tap any of the sounds, a preview will play. This will also look very different from device to device.

Usually there is also the option to use your own custom audio clips. Look for a “+” button. (Sometimes it’s in a “My Sounds” section.)
