How to check if your Android phone has RCS

RCS is believed to be the future of messaging on Android. It includes several features from Apple’s iMessage and modern instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp. RCS messaging is available worldwide, although it is not available on all Android phones.

In this article, we’re going to show you how to check that your particular Android smartphone has RCS support.

The benefits of RCS messaging on Android

Rich Communication Service (RCS) offers several advantages over SMS / MMS. To the example, you can send messages without a cellular connection. All you need is a connection to the internet.

Other important features include typing indicators, read receipts, and the ability to send files up to 105MB in size. You can also react to received messages with an emoji.

How to check RCS availability on your Android smartphone

Your Android smartphone must have RCS support to take advantage of these benefits. This is how you can check if RCS is available.

  1. Download and install News app from Google if you don’t have it yet.
  2. Open the Messages app.
  3. In the top right, tap the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose settings from the list of options in the pop-up menu.
  5. Tap Generally to open the general settings page.
  6. Then choose Chat functions.
  7. If RCS is available on your device, you will see an option to Activate chat functions.
  8. If your Android device doesn’t have these options, you won’t be able to use RCS.

RCS support is still patchy, despite Google rolling it out globally in 2020. It is only available on smartphones with Android 5.0 or higher. Also, make sure you have the latest version of the Google Messaging app installed and set as the default messaging app.

But even here you have to keep in mind that RCS is not available on all devices and cellular providers. For Samsung Galaxy users, the OEM’s standard messaging app also has RCS support.

If you’re not one of the lucky few, the best instant messaging apps can let you enjoy similar features and more. Like these apps WhatsApp and Telegram offer more features and support than RCS.

Write better with Google RCS

RCS is the successor to SMS and MMS. However, the function is not available on all Android smartphones.

That said, RCS is a giant leap forward in better messaging on Android. It offers Android users the coveted features that Apple iPhone users have long provided on iMessage.
