How to create and use multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge Like a pro

Microsoft’s move to the Chromium engine for its Edge Browser has changed things significantly for the better. In addition to improved performance and support for myriad extensions, it also has unique features like collections and tracking prevention that make it stand out from the crowd of Chromium. Microsoft Edge even adds a new dimension to your surfing by allowing you to create and use multiple profiles.

The new Microsoft Edge The Chromium web browser makes it easy to set up multiple user profiles. You can also easily switch between profiles and set a default profile to avoid confusion, should you wish. If you have a work account, you can also configure the browser to automatically switch profiles based on content type.

Here’s what you need to know about creating and using multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge Chrome on PC and Mac.

Create a new profile

Microsoft Edge Chromium should have automatically created a new profile the first time it was used. And in the meantime, you’ve probably signed in with a Microsoft account to sync your browsing data. However, you don’t have to use the same profile for all of your browsing activity.

To the example, you may want to surf the Internet without syncing your browsing data with your Microsoft account. Or, you may have another Microsoft account (personal or work) that you want to sign in to and access certain websites or synchronize certain forms of data. Then you can easily create a new profile.

Step 1: Click the profile icon in the top right corner of any Edge Window.

Step 2: In the profile flyout that appears, click Add Profile.

Step 3: Click the Add button.

Step 4: Click on Confirm to complete the creation of the profile.

You can use the profile immediately. Any bookmarks or passwords you create and save will be saved locally, separate from your other profile’s data.

If you want to back up your data online and sync passwords and favorites between devices, you need to sign in with a Microsoft account.

Sign in to your profile

In cases where you have a different Microsoft account (work or personal), you can easily use it to sign in to the profile you just created. This will protect your passwords and bookmarks, but you can also access your data on other devices by signing in with the same Microsoft account.

Step 1: Click the profile icon, then click Sign In.

Step 2: Select work or school if you want to sign in with a work account or Microsoft Account if you want to sign in with a personal account.

Step 3: After you have signed in with your account credentials, click Sync to begin syncing your browsing data.

Alternatively, click Customize to choose the specific forms of data that you want to sync with your Microsoft account.

Switch between profiles

You can create additional profiles and log in to them. Toggle between Microsoft Edge Profiling is also very easy. Just click the profile icon and then select the profile you want to use.

Each profile you switch to opens in a separate window. You can then juggle between profile windows using the taskbar (PC) or Mission Control (Mac).

Change profile name and picture

By default, Microsoft Edge labels your profiles in the order you add them (e.g. personal, personal 2, personal 3, etc.). You can rename it at any time. You can also add or change your profile picture.

Step 1: Click the profile icon, then click Manage Profile Settings.

Step 2: Click the More icon (three dots) next to the profile, then click Edit.

Step 3: Replace the standard profile designation with the name you want. To add or change the profile picture, click Change picture.

When you’re done, click Update.

Define standard profile

Microsoft Edge opens the last used profile when you click on an external link (e.g. from an e-mail client). As this is not always possible, you can specify a default profile for this action instead.

Step 1: In the Profile flyout, click Manage Profile Settings. Next, click on Multiple Profile Settings.

Step 2: Open the menu next to “Default External Link Profile,” then select the profile that you want to set as the default.

The change is saved automatically.

Automatic profile switching

If you’re signed into a profile with a work or school account, Microsoft Edge automatically prompts you to switch to the appropriate profile (personal or professional) based on the type of content you are accessing. If you want to prevent this, or if you do not receive such prompts, you must either deactivate or activate the corresponding setting.

Step 1: In the Profile flyout, click Manage Profile Settings. Next, click on Multiple Profile Settings.

Step 2: Use the switch next to Auto Profile Switch to turn the feature off or on.

The change is saved automatically.

Sign out of profile

Microsoft Edge you can easily log out of a profile. Your data will then no longer be synchronized with the Microsoft account, but the data that has already been synchronized will still remain online. You can also delete all locally stored browser data when you log out, but this will result in the browser also deleting your profile.

Step 1: Go to Edge In the settings pane, go to the profile that you want to sign out of, and then click Sign out.

Step 2: In the confirmation box that appears, click Sign out to disconnect your Microsoft account from your profile.

You can then continue to use the profile offline or sign in with the same Microsoft account at a later time. You can also sign in with a different Microsoft account, but then you’ll have to decide whether to merge existing data or start over.
