How to Crop Photos on iPhone and iPad

Would you like to zoom in on an image or cut out an element from the view? It’s easy to change the shape or proportions of a photo on your iPhone or iPad by cropping it with the Photos app. That’s how it’s done.

First, open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to the photo that you want to crop. In the upper right corner, tap the “Edit” button.

You are now in the image editing view. On the bottom toolbar, tap the Crop button (it looks like a box with arrows around it).

The picture is surrounded by a white frame. Swipe in on any edge to crop the picture. You can do this from all corners. Lift your finger to view the cropped image.

Grab the edge of the white frame and swipe inward to crop the photo.

You can also crop the picture to a specific aspect ratio (this is useful when you want the photo to be a perfect square). On the top toolbar, tap the Aspect Ratio button (it looks like overlapping boxes).

To change the aspect ratio, tap the Aspect Ratio button on the top toolbar (it looks like several boxes).

You can now select the aspect ratio (e.g. “4: 3” or “16: 9”, for example) or switch between portrait and landscape format.

Even after selecting the aspect ratio, you can continue to crop the image. The difference is that the aspect ratio is now locked. If you do not want to use the aspect ratio feature, choose the Original option.

When you’re happy with the cropping dimensions, tap the Done button in the lower toolbar (on iPhone) or in the upper-right corner (on iPad).

You can now share the photo with your friends by using the Share button on the bottom toolbar (it looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it).

How to undo the cropping

All edits in the Photos app are non-destructive. This means that once you have made the original change or editing on your device, you can restore any photo to its original state. To restore the photo you just cropped, open the photo in the Photos app.

Tap the “Edit” button in the upper right corner.
