How to Fix iPhone Back Tap Not Working

For iPhone users, Back Tap is one of the best features to be introduced alongside iOS 14. You can access important features, accessibility features, and shortcuts by simply tapping the back of the iPhone. Back Tap only relies on the iPhone’s accelerometer, so it will work on almost any iPhone running iOS 14.

But as with any new feature, there are times when Back Tap does not work as expected. If you are struggling to get it working on your iPhone, the following fixes should help you.

Upgrade to iOS 14

Back Tap is only available on iOS 14 and later versions of the iPhone’s system software. If you can’t find the features listed in Settings> Accessibility> Touch, you may have an older version of iOS installed on your iPhone.

To confirm, go to Settings> General> About. If the software version shows iOS 13 or an earlier version of iOS, return to the previous screen and select Software Update to update to iOS 14 or later.

Check compatibility

If you have iOS 14 or later installed and can’t find Back Tap, you may have an iPhone that doesn’t support the functionality. Some of the models that Back Tap cannot use include:

  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE (1st generation)

Check Back Tap Settings

Tap back only works if you bind it to a system function, accessibility option, or shortcut. To set it up, go to Settings> Accessibility> Touch> Tap back. Then tap Double Tap and Triple Tap to start binding actions. For more information, see our iPhone Back Tap walkthrough.

Remove case

Having trouble getting Back Tap to register? Do you have a case too? The feature works even when your iPhone is inside, but an extra bulky case can prevent the accelerometer from detecting your touches. If so, remove it and see if that helps. If so, consider upgrading to a slimmer chassis.

Try different bindings

Thanks to Back Tap, you can use system-related functions such as Spotlight search anywhere. However, some actions, such as shake to undo, will not activate unless there is a reason to. Try binding something else – if that works, then it’s probably not wrong with the functionality.

Force iPhone restart

If Back Tap does not register at all even though everything is set up correctly, try restarting your iPhone. This can help resolve any software-related anomalies that are preventing you from using the feature.

To force restart on an iPhone with Face ID, press and hold the volume up, press and hold the volume down, and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo. If you’re using an iPhone with Touch ID, instead press and hold the Home and Power buttons at the same time for a few seconds.

Update iOS

Still experiencing Back Tap issues? If you are still in the early stages of the iOS 14 release cycle, make sure to install the latest iOS updates as they become available. Back Tap is still a relatively new feature, and the latest updates can help fix bugs or other issues that are affecting normal functionality. Go to Settings> General> Software Update to install the latest iOS updates.

New updates also introduce a variety of other stability fixes and security improvements, so make it a habit to install them.

Reset iPhone

Corrupted or incorrect settings can also prevent Back Tap from working on your iPhone. Try resetting them to see if that helps.

Go to Settings> General> Reset and tap on Reset All Settings to initiate the reset process. After resetting, dive into the accessibility screen, set up Back Tap, and try to use the feature. For the most part, it should start working properly.

Back tap evolution

The above fixes should help fix Back Tap on your iPhone, but if you are using an unsupported device there is no other option but to upgrade. But as great as Back Tap is, we don’t recommend it unless you have a number of other reasons why you should upgrade to a newer iPhone.
