How to install Arduino IDE on CentOS 8

  • Download the Arduino IDE setup file

  • Launch Arduino IDE

  1. Open a terminal window with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Alt + t. Or click Actions in the left corner of your desktop to open a terminal on CentOS 8.0.
  2. Log in as root user. Run the su command on a terminal. You are now logged in as root user.

Download Arduino IDE

To install the Arduino IDE on your system, you need the Arduino IDE installation file. To do this, you will open the Arduino download page and select the latest Arduino IDE “Arduino 1.8.12” available now. You will choose the Arduino IDE, which supports your Linux system architecture, 32 or 64 bit. Another alternative is you download it using the wget command in the terminal. Enter the following command in the terminal to download the latest Arduino 1.8.12:

wget https://downloads.arduino.cc/arduino-1.8.12-linux64.tar.xz

In the image above, you can see that the file name “arduino-1.8.12-linux.tar.xz” was saved on your system after the boot process was completed. This downloaded file will be saved in your system home directory.

An archive file is saved on your system. You will now extract the archive file using the tar command. To extract the file, run the following command on the terminal:

tar -xvf arduino-1.8.12-linux64.tar.xz

After executing the above command, you will see the process of extracting the file on the terminal.

Install the Arduino script

Once you’ve finished extracting the file, it’s time to run a script in a terminal to install the Arduino IDE on your CentOS 8.0. You will go to the extracted arduino-1.8.12 folder and then run the script on the terminal to install the Arduino IDE.

sudo ./install.sh

Launch Arduino IDE

Now you will launch the Arduino IDE from your desktop. Click Actions and select Show Application Form, where you launch the Ardunio IDE by double clicking the application icon.

You can also launch using the search bar, click “Actions” where you will see the search bar. You will type “Arduino” in the search bar.
