How to Install AutoKey on Ubuntu-Automated Iterative Typing

AutoKey is a free and open source desktop automation tool for Linux. For best results you need the X11 Xorg system, but not for Weyland. With this AutoKey tool, you just have to type less. It works in any browser, text editor, code editor, and almost any application. It works like text extension software. Can record mouse and keyboard. You can also insert a macro script. It remains in the system tray for easy transportation. You can set abbreviations and phrases if desired. Released under the GPL v3 license.

Install AutoKey on Ubuntu

AutoKey is available as a native deb file format and can also be installed via the pip python package manager. Go to the Autokey download page below and download autokey in .deb file format. Two versions are available.autokey-gtk GTK-based desktop environment (GNOME, MATE, Unity, etc.) and autokey-qt Qt-based desktop environment (KDE Plasma, LXQT, Lumina, etc.). You also need to download autokey-common.. I’m using Ubuntu Gnome, so I downloaded autokey-gtk and autokey-common. Save it to your download folder. Change the command based on the downloaded file name. The downloaded file name is “autokey-common_0.95.10-0_all.deb“When”autokey-gtk_0.95.10-0_all.deb

Download AutoKey

In Ubuntu terminal (ctrl + alt + t), execute the following commands one by one. If necessary, enter the user password.

cd Downloads
sudo dpkg -i autokey-common_0.95.10-0_all.deb
sudo apt install -f
sudo dpkg -i autokey-gtk_0.95.10-0_all.deb
sudo apt install -f

Install AutoKey via pip.

AutoKey can also be installed from the pip python package manager. This requires pip to be installed on your system. Follow the link below.

Install pip on Ubuntu

Then run this command to install AutoKey via the Python package manager.

sudo pip install autokey

that’s all. You can now open AutoKey from the application menu.
