How to install Deepin Desktop on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

This brief tutorial shows how to install Deepin Desktop Environment on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS via PPA.

Deepin Desktop is the default desktop environment. Ubuntu DDE remix, Ubuntu system Remix flavor. The official PPA is available in the Deepin desktop package for Ubuntu 20.04.

1.) Add Official PPA For Ubuntu DDE Remix:

Open a terminal from the system application launcher. Run the command to add the PPA when opened.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntudde-dev/stable

Enter the user password for the sudo prompt (no visual feedback) and press Enter to continue.

2.) Install Deepin Desktop via apt.

After adding the PPA, run the command to update the system package cache and install the desktop.

sudo apt update

sudo apt install ubuntudde-dde

If you want to install a Deepin-style login screen, select lightdm as the default display manager during the installation process.

Once installed, log out and select your “deep” session to log in.

How to remove Deepin Desktop:
IMPORTANT: You must change the default display manager back to gdm3 before removing the desktop!!!

And you do this by running the command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

To remove the Deepin desktop environment, open a terminal and run the command.

sudo apt remove '~ndde-.*' '~ndeepin-.*' startdde ubuntudde-dde '~nxscreensaver-.*'

How to install Deepin Desktop on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

You can also use commands to remove unwanted libraries.

sudo apt autoremove
