How to install MATE Desktop on Debian 10

Most people get bored with the standard Linux distribution desktop environment in Debian. So they are looking for some kind of desktop customization. In this case, there are several configuration tools and options available that you can set or activate on your Debian 10 system. To install Mate desktop on your system, you need to follow these steps:

Install Mate desktop using apt repositories

The mate desktop environment is available in the Debian 10 apt repositories. This way you can install it from there. Let’s start!

Step 1: Open Terminal

First, let’s open a terminal for you. To do this, you will click on the Actions option that is available in the upper left corner of the Debian 10 desktop, and then enter the word terminal in the search bar. Click on the terminal application which is highlighted in the following image.

Step 2: Install Mate Desktop

As mentioned above, the mate desktop is available in the Debian 10 apt repositories. Therefore, you can install the mate working environment on your Debian 10 system by entering the following command in a terminal:

$ sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

During the installation of the mate desktop, the terminal will display a prompt to the user who will ask you if you want to continue with the installation process or not. If so, press “y” and then press “Enter” on your keyboard. The installation will resume again. It will take time to complete the complete installation of all mate desktop packages.

Once the installation is complete, you will reboot your Debian 10 system with the following command:

$ sudo reboot

After you log in again, click on “Actions” on the system and enter Appearance in the search bar. You will get the following results on your system: Advertising
