MySQL Workbench is a GUI application that enables database administrators and developers to manage, develop, design, create and maintain MySQL database systems. This tool was developed by the same team behind the MySQL relational database management system. In this short article, we will discuss the issue of installing MySQL Workbench on the Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop operating system.

The following versions provide MySQL Workbench:

  • MySQL Workbench Community Edition -This is an open source (GPL license) version
  • MySQL Workbench Standard Edition -Commercial, requires a license to run
  • MySQL Workbench Enterprise Edition -Commercial, license required

As a developer, most of the functions required for application design and database integration are provided in the open source version. These functions include but are not limited to the following functions.

  • Visual SQL development: You will get SQL code editor, completion, formatter, syntax highlighting, code generation, code snippets, and usage of history.
  • Visual database management: You will be able to stop/start the server locally and remotely, view critical server diagnostic information, view and parse slow logs and error logs, view and edit server settings, and view and edit MySQL replication settings.
  • User and session management: Manage application roles, users and sessions from a graphical interface.
  • Data management: Import and export, quickly find rows or cells that are difficult to find, and search for table data.
  • Connection management: Configure the connection with the MySQL server and configure the SSH connection with the local and remote servers.
  • Visual data modeling: Automatic layout, model stored procedures, triggers, functions, model user security and automatic layout.
  • Reverse engineering from SQL scripts and real-time databases.
  • Mode synchronization
  • And many other functions

Install MySQL Workbench on Ubuntu 20.04

This guide is suitable for installing the open source version of MySQL Workbench on Ubuntu 20.04 Linux systems. There is a MySQL repository for Focal Fossa, which will be used to install MySQL Workbench on Ubuntu 20.04.

The first step is to add the MySQL repository to the Ubuntu system. This can be done quickly by running the following command in the terminal.

sudo apt update
sudo apt -y install wget
wget https://dev.mysql.com/get/mysql-apt-config_0.8.15-1_all.deb

Confirm that the file has been downloaded locally.

$ ls -lh mysql-apt-config_0.8.15-1_all.deb
-rw-rw-r-- 1 jmutai jmutai 35K Feb 20 11:55 mysql-apt-config_0.8.15-1_all.deb

Run the installer script and it will configure the MySQL APT repository for you. For this, you can use the apt package manager or dpkg. I use apt because it can install any required dependencies without user intervention.

sudo apt install ./mysql-apt-config_0.8.15-1_all.deb

To use dpkg, the following command should be executed.

sudo dpkg -i mysql-apt-config_0.8.15-1_all.deb

During the execution, you will be asked to select the MySQL product that will configure the repository for installation. If you want to install the server package in the future, it is recommended that you choose MySQL Server.

You can select the version of MySQL in the installation screen. Please use the latest version, because the client is always backward compatible, rather than using an older version that might miss the features of the latest version.
