How to install Thonny Python IDE on Ubuntu

Thonny is a free open source Python IDE for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. It’s easy to use and has a built-in Python configuration, making it ideal for beginners. It comes with a built-in debugger that allows you to explore variables and explain their scope through variable explorer, code completion, and syntax error support. You can also easily install third-party installation packages on the Thonny IDE. Other features include heap, stack, assistant, and object inspector. Released under the Mit License.

Install Thonny Python IDE on Ubuntu

Thonny Python IDE via Linux installer script. Download the Thonny Python IDE and python and install them on your system.

Open the terminal software (ctrl + alt + t) and execute the following command.

bash <(wget -O - https://thonny.org/installer-for-linux)

Then type in to verify your Thonny and Python installations. This Thonny installer script installs Thonny and Python on your system. You can open the Thonny Python IDE from the application list.

Alternatively, you can run it from the installed folder. For me, it is installed in “/ home / manikandan / apps / thonny / bin / thonny”. Here “manicandan” is my username. Get the installation path at the end of the thonny installation process.

cd /home/manikandan/apps/thonny/bin/
./thonny

You can uninstall Tonny with the following command.

cd /home/manikandan/apps/thonny/bin/
./uninstall

Then run this Thonny Python IDE pip installation command in your terminal. Thonny will be installed.

sudo pip3 install thonny

Install the Thonny Python IDE via apt.

You can also install the Thonny IDE from the Ubuntu repository, but this is not the recommended method as it may not be the latest version.At the terminal run

sudo apt update
sudo apt install thonny
