Welcome to how to install VirtualBox on Kali Linux, Ubuntu and Debian.

What is VirtualBox?

VirtualBox is a cross-platform virtualization application. Basically, it is a type 2 hypervisor that allows you to run multiple operating systems on one host at the same time. You can run multiple operating systems at one time, such as running Windows applications on Linux

Why choose VirtualBox?

Virtualbox is an excellent tool that can be used to create your own lab for different tasks such as network, server management practices, software testing, testing different Linux and Windows distributions, hacking labs and more.

You can easily create an isolated laboratory and try other software, tools and operating systems without worrying about destroying the basic operating system. The only limiting factor is the CPU processing speed, mainly the size of the RAM.

There are various operating system versions. The host operating system is the operating system of the physical computer on which VirtualBox is installed. The guest is an operating system running on a virtual machine.

If you are running an older version of Virtualbox on Kali Linux and Ubuntu or Debian Linux distributions, you can easily upgrade to the latest version. I tried to download the Debian package for my Kali Linux Box and install it using the dpkg -i command, but it gave me some errors. I found the correct installation method, here is:

Install VirtualBox

For Ubuntu, you can download the software package from the following location:

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (64-bit)

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (32-bit)

Ubuntu 17.04 (64-bit)

Then enter the following to install

sudo dpkg -i package_name.deb

For Debian 9-based debian and Kali Linux, you can download and navigate to / etc / apt / sources file.

$ sudo vim /etc/apt/sources

Then add any of the following lines based on your distribution.

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian stretch contrib

For Debian 8, replace stretch with Jesse.

Use the following command to add Oracle public key for apt-secure

sudo wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Install the latest version of VirtualBox now

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dkms
sudo apt-get install virtualbox

Download now VirtualBox 5.2.4 Oracle VM VirtualBox expansion pack

After successful download, double-click it and it will be installed automatically.

Now, you just need to enter the following to start VirtualBox

$ virtualbox

Alternatively, you can use VBoxHeadless to start VirtualBox in Headless mode as follows:

 $ VBoxHeadless -startvm "VMName"

To uninstall VirtualBox using its configuration settings:

sudo apt-get --purge remove virtualbox
