In today’s guide, we will discuss the process of installing vSphere ESXi 7 on Cisco UCS bare metal. The installation process can be used for any other type of server hardware. The two core components of vSphere are ESXi and vCenter Server. In this guide, we will perform the installation of ESXi 7, which is a virtualization platform on which virtual machines and virtual devices can be created and run.

Our next guide will be about the installation of vCenter Server. vCenter is a service that acts as the central administrator of connected ESXi hosts in the network. With vCenter Server, you can manage the resources of multiple hosts as a pool. The following are the minimum hardware requirements for installing vSphere ESXi 7.

vSphere ESXi 7 hardware requirements

  • Host At least two CPUs core.
  • If you plan to run a 64-bit virtual machine, you must enable support for hardware virtualization (Intel VT-x or AMD RVI) on the x64 CPU.
  • The NX/XD bit should be enabled for the CPU in the BIOS.
  • At least 4 GB of physical RAM. Provide at least 8 GB of RAM to run virtual machines in a typical production environment.
  • One or more Gigabit or faster Ethernet controllers
  • The boot disk for USB or SD devices is at least 8 GB, and the boot disk for other device types is at least 32 GB, such as HDD, SSD, or NVMe. The boot device must not be shared between ESXi hosts.
  • SCSI disk or local non-network RAID LUN with non-partitioned virtual machine space.
  • For Serial ATA (SATA), it is a disk connected through a supported SAS controller or a supported on-board SATA controller. SATA disks are considered remote disks, not local disks.

Install vSphere ESXi 7 on a bare metal server

The next part will be to install ESXi 7 step by step on the physical server. This can be hardware from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Cisco or any other vendor. You can use PXE, VMware Auto Deploy to perform an automatic installation, or you can use a bootable USB/CD or IPMI to perform a manual installation. vSphere 7 supports booting ESXi hosts from the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).

Step 1: Create bootable media/attach ISO for remote installation

Start at Download and burn the ESXi Installer ISO image to CD or DVD. The direct download link for the ESXi installer is https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/downloads. Click ESXi listed under Data Center and Cloud Infrastructure.

Use the tools available in the operating system that support the creation of VMware bootable devices to create the installation media. Check out the official guide below:

Step 2: Start ESXI 7 installation on the bare metal server

Select the installation media and press Enter to start installing ESXI 7 on the bare metal server.

Choose the first option to install ESXi 7 on the server.
