Install Viewnior via the command line
Viewnior is easily accessible through the official Debian repository and can be installed via the command line using the apt-get command.
Open the Terminal application by pressing the Super key (Windows) and searching the Application Launcher as follows:
The next step is to update the repository index of your system with the following command:
$ sudo apt-get update
This will help you install the latest available software version from the Internet. Please note that only an authorized user can add, remove and configure software in Debian.
You are now ready to install Viewnior; You can do this by running the following command as sudo:
$ sudo apt-get install viewnior
The system may ask you to enter a password for sudo, as well as provide you with the option Y / n to continue the installation. Type Y, then press Enter; software will be installed on your system. However, the process may take some time depending on the speed of your internet.
You can check the version number of the application, and also make sure that it is actually installed on your system with the following command:
$ viewnior --version
Install Viewnior via the user interface
Alternatively, you can use the Debian Software Manager through the user interface to install Viewnior as follows:
On the Debian toolbar / action bar, click the Software icon.
In the software manager, click the search icon, and then enter Viewnior in the search bar. Search results will contain relevant entries as follows:
The Viewnior entry listed here is maintained in the Debian Stable Main repository. Click on this search entry to open the following view:
Click the Install button to start the installation process. An authentication dialog box opens in which you can specify your authentication information.
Please note that only an authorized user can add / remove and configure software in Debian. Enter your password and click the Authentication button. After that, the installation process will begin, displaying a progress bar as follows:
After that, Viewnior will be installed on your system, and after successful installation you will receive the following message:
In the above dialog box, you can directly launch Viewnior and even remove it immediately for any reason.
You can launch the Viewnior application by entering the keywords “viewnior” in the search bar of the Application Launcher, as shown below:

As mentioned earlier, Eye of Gnome is the default image viewer for Debian. Therefore, whenever you open an image, it opens in the image viewer / EOG. In this case, if you want to open the image in Viewnior, right-click the image and select “Open with another application”, and then select “Viewnior” from the list of applications as follows:
Make Viewnior your default image viewer
If you prefer Viewnior to the default image viewer, you can set it as the default photo viewer using the Settings utility. The easiest way to do this is to find the “default applications” in the Application Launcher as follows:
When you open the specified result record, it will open the Settings utility in the Details> Default Applications view as follows:
In the Photos drop-down list, select View, and it will now be used as the default photo viewer.
