prelude

The Windows subsystem for Linux enables developers to run the GNU / Linux environment (including most command line tools, utilities, and applications) directly on unmodified Windows without adding overhead to the virtual machine.

WSL enables you to:

  • Choose your favorite GNU / Linux distribution (Arch Linux, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Kali, Debian, Fedora, Pengwin, etc.).
  • Run common command line free software such as grep, sed, awk or other ELF-64 binaries.
  • Run Bash Shell scripts and GNU / Linux command line applications
  • Install other software using your own GNU / Linux distribution package manager.
  • Invoke a Windows application using a Unix-like command-line shell.
  • Call GNU / Linux applications on Windows.

Therefore, with this powerful feature, we can do a lot of work without having to worry about installing a hypervisor, so that we can enjoy the benefits of Linux. Once Windows 10 is installed and ready, follow these steps and add Arch Linux to it.

Step 1: Install Windows Subsystem for Linux

This feature enables Windows to “host” Linux. To enable this feature, you can run a PowerShell command or follow the GUI steps below.

Option 1: Run Powershell command

Open PowerShell as administrator and run the following command

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux

Optional 2: Follow the instructions in the screenshot

Click the Windows key and type “Control” to search for “Control Panel”.

When it appears, click it to open the application.

Click on “Programs”.

In Programs, click Turn Windows features on or off

This will open a file called “Windows features“. Scroll down until you see”Windows Linux Subsystem“. Click the checkbox to check the option, and then click”it is good“. This will prompt you to restart your computer. Be good at obeying commands. After restarting your computer, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Go to GitHub and download ArchWSL

Click this link to get ArchWSL https://github.com/yuk7/ArchWSL/releases/tag/18062100. Click the ZIP file to download it.

Step 3: Extract the downloaded file

After successfully downloading the file, simply unzip it to get the application we are interested in.

Step 4: Click on the Arch.exe application

Now it’s time to install our application and install Arch Beast on the desktop. Double-click the application file and it will open a command line window as shown below.

When the installation is complete, you will see the message shown below. Press any key and we have the application (ArchWSL) installed.

Step 5: Launch the application

Just click on the application again and you should let the Arch Linux console wait for your command.

in conclusion

Now it’s time to enjoy the Arch instance in the Windows environment, and we hope it will be interesting. If you don’t like Bash, you can continue to install your favorite shell and make other modifications as needed. All in all, we hope this article is helpful and enjoyable.
