How to set different notification tones for different apps on Android phone

With so many apps installed on our phones, a barrage of notifications will inevitably confuse us. It is difficult to find out which app sent which notification and if it is important. Use separate notification tones a tone other than the standard tone is useful in various situations. For example, when you are cooking, driving a car, or doing similar activities and you cannot or do not want to touch the phone.

Let’s see how to change the default sound and keep a separate notification sound for Android apps.

Method 1: from the phone settings

Android 8.0 Oreo has changed the way with notification channels that allow app notifications to be set individually for apps. However, the setting to change the default app tone is buried deep in the settings.

Here are the steps to help you change the default notification sound on any Android app.

Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to Apps & notifications, Manage installed apps, or Manage apps, depending on the option available.

Step 2: Under All apps, tap the app whose notification tone you want to change. Let’s go with WhatsApp as a example. Tap on WhatsApp.

Step 3: Tap Notifications under WhatsApp. If you’re using an earlier version of Android, you’ll be given the option of Standard Sound or Sound. Tap it to change the tone.

However, on phones running Android 8.0 Oreo and above, you will see different notification channels or categories. For example, you will see categories like group notifications and message notifications under WhatsApp Notifications. You will find that notification categories usually have a toggle switch and a straight bar in front of it.

So tap on the text of the message notifications to see more settings.

Then tap on Advanced followed by Sound. Assign a different notification tone for WhatsApp Messages from individual contacts. You can also adjust other notification settings on this screen.

You can also set a different tone for WhatsApp Group messages by tapping the Group Notifications category channel. For other apps, categories are shown based on the app. To change the default notification sound, tap the notification category to view the sound setting.

Use the same steps to change the default sound for other apps. Let’s take another one example the Gmail app.

How to set a different notification sound for different Gmail accounts on Android

Some users add multiple Gmail accounts to their phones for various reasons. These accounts can be business or personal. Keeping a separate email notification tone for each account will help you distinguish the meaning of the email.

Step 1: Open Settings and go to Apps or Installed Apps.

Step 2: Under All apps, tap Gmail.

Step 3: Tap on Notifications. You will be greeted by different notification channels categorized according to your Gmail account. Tap the email or mail text under your Gmail account that you want to change the notification tone for.

Step 4: In the Notification category, tap Advanced for more options. Tap Sound. Select a tone you want to use. Check out other Gmail notification settings that you should customize.

How to change the notification sound for messages on Android

To change the text tone, go to Settings> Apps. Tap the Messages app followed by Notifications. Depending on the manufacturer, you will see different notification categories. Depending on the available option, tap Incoming Messages or General. Then tap on Advanced followed by Sound. Change the tone.

On dual SIM handsets, the notification categories SIM 1 and SIM 2 are displayed under Notifications. Tap the required SIM card and go to Advanced> Sound to change the notification sound.

Method 2: From the app settings

Some Android apps have a built-in setting for changing the default notification tones. You can also customize the notification tone within the app. You can even customize notification tones for individual contacts if your app allows it.

Suppose you want to change your phone’s ringtone. To do this, open your standard telephone app. At the top, tap the three-point symbol. Select settings.

Tap Sounds & Vibration or something similar like call notifications / ringtones. Tap Ringtone and choose a new ringtone.

Likewise, if you have the WhatsApp Notification tone, open WhatsApp Settings from the app. Go to Notifications. Here you can see the notification options for individual and group messages. Tap Notification Sound to change the sound.

Tapping the notifications setting in some apps takes you to the notifications screen that you would see if you went to Phone Settings> Apps> (app name)> Notifications. In such cases, tap on the notification category as shown in Method 1 above to change the default sound.
