How to stop Android apps from using mobile background data

Data usage, especially on a mobile data plan, is something you may want to keep close Keep an eye on. It’s very annoying when apps that you don’t open often eat through the data limits in the background. Fortunately, you can prevent this from happening with Android.

Android makes it pretty easy to keep track of your data usage. You can even set up notifications to keep your smartphone or tablet from exceeding your limits. Another handy trick is to prevent certain apps from using mobile data in the background altogether.

How to Track Your Data Usage on Android

Note: This is specifically used to restrict mobile data. It won’t prevent the app from connecting to the WiFi in the background.

First, swipe down from the top of your device’s screen (once or twice, depending on the manufacturer of your phone or tablet) and tap the gear icon to open the settings menu.

Next, choose Apps & Notifications.

Tap “Show All” [Number] Apps ”for the full list of installed apps.

Find the app in the list for which you want to restrict the use of background data.

Next, select “Cellular data and WiFi”.

Turn off the switch for “Background data”.

Deactivate background data

That’s it! The app can then no longer use mobile data in the background. However, it can still use data when you open it. For apps that you don’t use very often, this is a great way to make sure they don’t eat up your data volume.
