Hi Computingforgeeks community. In today’s guide, I will guide you through the process of installing the Google Hangouts client on CentOS 8. Google Hangouts is a cross-platform messaging application developed and owned by Google. With Hangouts, you can have free conversations with friends, colleagues, and business customers through direct messaging, photo sharing, using emoji and even with group video calls.

There is currently no official Google Hangouts client for Linux, we will install it called k cattle. YakYak is a desktop client for Google Hangouts, with Pre-built binaries Suitable for macOS, Linux 32/64 and Windows 32/64. Some of the main features of the YakYak Google Hangouts client include:

  • Send/receive chat messages
  • Send/receive SMS / MMS (Project Fi / Google Voice)-basic functions
  • Create/change conversations (rename, add people)
  • Leave/delete conversation
  • Notification (use native operating system notification)
    • Turn notifications on/off
  • Drag and drop, copy and paste or attach buttons to upload images.
  • Know Hangupsbot synchronization room (no bot name, correct user picture)
  • Show inline image
  • Send status/focus/type/activeclient to make it behave like an appropriate client
  • History rollback
  • Video/audio integration (open in Chrome)
  • Focus/type indication (mainly design issues. Please keep it clean)
  • Provide alternative color schemes
  • So far, translations in 22 languages ​​have been provided:
    • English/Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil)/French/Spanish/Czech/German/Polish/Russian/Hebrew/Ukrainian/Slovenian/Korean/Tamil/Romanian/Swedish/Japanese/Italy Language/Danish/Bengali/Bengali/Slovak/Turkish/Arabic/Telugu/Finnish/Breton/Simplified Chinese

Install Google Hangouts client on CentOS 8

Before starting the installation, we need to check The latest version of YakYak. At the time this article was updated, this was v1.5.9.

There are two options to get the latest version:

  • Save the version as a variable before downloading
  • Use the direct download link with the version in the URL
  • Use curl and grep functions to check the latest version

Download Yakyak rpm package

Download the latest rpm package for CentOS 8. This file can be used to install on Fedora, RHEL and any other Red Hat-based Linux distributions (such as Oracle Linux).

If the curl command line tool is not available for any reason, please use dnf to install it.

sudo dnf -y install curl

After downloading the rpm package, use the following command to install it.

sudo dnf install libXScrnSaver
sudo dnf localinstall ./yakyak-*.rpm

hit ÿ Press on the keyboard to start the installation.

Use Google Hangouts client on CentOS 8

If the installation is successful, the software should be provided in the “Desktop Launcher” section or CLI.

Start the application from the CLI:

$ yakyak

During the first run, you will be asked to register or log in to your Google account.
