The version of SQL Server Developer produced by Microsoft is a full-featured, free version that is licensed for use as a development and test database in non-production environments. We will install SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition on Windows Server 2019. It is provided for macOS, Ubuntu, SLES, RHEL and Windows operating systems.
Before you start, go to Microsoft SQL Server download page And download SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition.
Step 1: Run the installed application
Navigate to the directory / folder where the application was downloaded and double-click it to begin the installation process.
Step 2: Choose a custom installation
After selecting a custom installation, click “installation“. Allows the app to download and install software packages.
You have “Basic”, “Custom” and “Download Media” installation types. I recommend that you choose Custom to adjust the installation of SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition on Windows Server 2019.
Specify a directory where SQL Server will store the files downloaded for installation.
Please be patient as the download begins, it may take some time.
Step 3: Select installation
After downloading all packages, a new page will appear as shown below. Click ”installation“
Step 4: Select a new stand-alone SQL Server
After step 3, select the first option in the list and proceed to the next step. As follows.
Step 5: Specify the version
This step depends on whether you need “Developer“,”Evaluation“Or”expression“. Their differences are described in the window. Since we are installing”DeveloperVersion, let’s continue with that option. Click “next“
Step 6: Accept the license terms
select”I accept the license terms and privacy statement“Broadcast, then click”next“.
Step 7: Microsoft Update
you can choose”Microsoft Update“Radio or not, in this step, then click”next“
Step 8: Installation rules
Windows will check the system for any potential issues that may occur while the installer is running. If the firewall is running, you may see “Windows firewall“To remind you to open the corresponding port after installation is complete. Click”next“, You are satisfied with the results of this page.
Step 9: Feature selection
In this step, you will be provided with many features that come with SQL Server. If you want to include a feature in your SQL instance, you can select their radio buttons. Go ahead and choose what you want. Click “nextafter finishing.
Step 10: Instance configuration
Name your instance, in this step, then click “next“.
Step 11: Server configuration
Specify the service account and collation configuration here. Click “next” after that.
Step 12: Configure database engine parameters
This step gives you the opportunity to choose the authentication mechanism that will be used, set the password for the administrator account, and select another administrator account.
I prefer Mixed mode authentication Users can come from the domain or manually add in the SQL instance. Choose the password that works best for you, then enter the password and any other settings you want to configure.
If you are keen on this, you will notice that there are other tabs on this page. they are “Data directory“, Where you can specify where you want the log to be saved, where the root directory is, and where the backup and database directories are.
If you have different partitions in your server, you can place these directories in a smart way. Other tags include “memory“,”Temporary database“,”Maximum DOP“with”File stream“. View them and set your custom settings there. Click”nextafter finishing. Don’t forget to add the admin user.
Step 13: Analysis Services configuration
Since analytics are enabled, this is the step to configure them. Select an administrator and set the desired server mode. Click ”next“.
Step 14: Accept the service installation
If you selected a specific package that suits your needs in step 9, you will be provided with installation guides and settings tailored to that specific service. For example, I chose Python and am now asked to agree to install it. When you’re done, click “next” carry on.
Step 15: Prepare for installation
This step summarizes what we are doing so far. The packages we choose to install, the settings we configure, and much more. Look carefully at the list. Once you are satisfied with the summary, please click “installation“
Wait for the server installation to complete.
Step 16: Finish
After everything is installed. Click ”turn off“. Your SQL instance is installed and ready to use.
Our SQL Server 2019 instance was finally installed. All that’s left is to connect to it, create a database and utilize its resources.
