Kuo: Apple MR headset with Wi-Fi 6 will be launched in 2022

Apple’s first head-mounted headset appears to hit the market in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who added that the product would have fast Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity. The need for faster Wi-Fi 6 networking is dictated by the fact that the headset is likely to have limited resources and limited battery life due to Apple’s strict requirements for size and weight.

The analyst says that Meta’s latest Oculus Quest 2 supports Wi-Fi 6, as the protocol is significantly better than Wi-Fi 5 in terms of transmission speed and power consumption. In particular, Wi-Fi 6 helps the new Oculus Air Link to work more stable. Additionally, the Wi-Fi 6 network allows for a screen refresh rate of up to 120 Hz versus 72 Hz or 90 Hz for Wi-Fi 5, Kuo wrote in one of. shared research note MacRumors.

The analyst didn’t clarify whether the headset would end up being a standalone product or an accessory that an iPhone needs for processing power. However, the device will likely have to deliver significant computational and graphics power as it will reportedly run immersive gaming and focus on streaming video and conferencing.

Apple plans to launch its own expensive device with advanced chips, displays, sensors and avatar-based functions as early as next year.

Apple’s first headset will be a mixed reality version. That means it will have both AR and VR capabilities. While games can be played in either environment, virtual reality is what you want for serious high-performance games with great graphics. For Apple’s first headset, it’s what it’s striving for: a mixed reality experience that can handle games in high-quality virtual reality with snappy chips and high-end displays.

Kuo says upcoming headsets from other players like Sony and Meta, both expected to be released in the second quarter of 2022, will also include Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Apple’s ambitions in this area should include both augmented and virtual reality products.

Aside from the rumored mixed reality headset that would combine virtual reality and mixed reality in a single head-worn accessory, the company is also supposed to develop lightweight augmented reality glasses that are supposed to superimpose high-quality computer graphics over the real world.
