LMMS 1.2.2 has been released! How to install on Ubuntu 20.04

A few days ago the free open source digital audio workstation software LMMS 1.2.2 was released. Here’s how to install on Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 19.10, Ubuntu 20.04, and derivatives.

LMMS 1.2.2 is a maintenance release, with some improvements and various bug fixes.

How to install LMMS 1.2.2 on Ubuntu:

A single executable, not an installation page. Appimages can be downloaded on the release page (see previous link).

If you want to install lmms music works via Ubuntu PPA, do the following steps one by one.

1.) Open a terminal by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on your keyboard or by searching for “Terminal” in the system application menu. Once open, run the following command.

                      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/lmms

Enter the sudo prompt user password (without asterisk feedback) and press Enter to continue adding the PPA.

2.) Then run the command to update the system package cache and install the music production software.

                      sudo apt update

sudo apt install lmms

Note: lmms-vst-server It is a 32-bit package only. May be installed with a large amount of 32-bit dependent libraries. Also, if you add the wine apt repository, the installation may be rejected.


To remove lmms, run the following command:

                      sudo apt remove --autoremove lmms

Then remove PPA through Software and Updates -> Other Software or by running the command.

                      sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/lmms
