In the January 2021 app update, KDE announced NeoChat, a new chat application that is a Matrix client for desktop and mobile.
Matrix is an instant messaging system similar to Whatsapp and Telegram, but uses an open and decentralized network for secure and privacy-protected communications.
NeoChat is a fork of another QML client, Spectral, that uses the libQuotient library to interact with the Matrix protocol. With an elegant and responsive user interface, it can automatically and gracefully adapt to any screen size. It works on both desktop and mobile and is installed by default on the PinePhone KDE edition.
In addition to sending and responding to messages, NeoChat also has the following features:
- Upload image, audio and video files.
- Support for room chat and private chat.
- Integration of emoji pickers.
- Drag and drop copy support.
- A built-in image editor that supports cropping and rotating images.
The previous chat app is version 1.0 and does not implement some features such as encryption support, video calls and message editing.
