OnePlus 9 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro: wild siblings!

OnePlus phones are insanely popular, and for good reason. the recently released OnePlus 9 Pro packages state-of-the-art hardware and software, but also with the highest price that OnePlus has ever issued. This may surprise some how much the OnePlus 9 Pro has improved over its predecessor, the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Right off the bat, we have a wide range of differences when we talk about the build quality and design. The OnePlus design of the central camera that was found on the 8 Pro has disappeared and is replaced by a more general, more. replaced Samsung-like design with the camera module on the top left. In terms of design and optics alone, I think the OnePlus 8 Pro is definitely the phone that will get more attention. Hide the OnePlus logo with a case and many people will mistake the 9 Pro for a Samsung smartphone.

But beyond the looks and workmanship, both phones come with Gorilla Glass 5 front and back with an aluminum frame in the middle. Despite the same materials, the feel is very, very different. The OnePlus 9 Pro is slightly smaller and lighter than the OnePlus 8 Pro, but is definitely better in the hand due to the curvature of the glass panels. Let me explain. See the glass on the OnePlus 8 Pro is arched very aggressively, which makes it difficult to get a good grip on. It just feels very slippery without a cover and very uncomfortable personally. The OnePlus 9 Pro was gentle on the glass curve and I really believe it made a significant difference in ease of use. It’s easier to grip without a case and doesn’t feel like it’s waiting to slide out.

Of course, the rough texture of my Stellar Black OnePlus 9 Pro is also more handy than the satin texture of the Ultramarine Blue 8 Pro. In short, the OnePlus 8 Pro is the better looking phone while the OnePlus 9 Pro is the phone with the better feel.

Let’s get to the displays. Specifically, both displays are almost identical with the same resolution, the same refresh rate of 120 Hz and even the same size of 6.7 inches. But there are 2 big usability factors for the OnePlus 9 Pro. First that the OnePlus 8 Pro had a widespread display problem where users reported a range of issues from black crush to smudging to shades of green. I have it on my OnePlus 8 Pro and while it doesn’t make the phone unusable it leaves a bad taste. I the OnePlus 9 Pro extensively tested for the same defects, even made a video about it, and there were no such problems, which was a relief.
The second factor is the curves on the display. The 8 Pro’s display, like I said, is curved much more aggressively and it’s a huge headache, resulting in a lot of accidental touches and a lot of unwanted glare.

Here, too, the OnePlus 9 Pro has reduced the aggressiveness of the display curve and thus alleviated this problem. Although the display panels look extremely identical on the data sheet, the OnePlus 9 Pro offers a much better experience.

OnePlus 9 Pro vs. OnePlus 8 Pro performance comparison

One area where the OnePlus 9 Pro doesn’t offer a much better experience is in performance. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, flagship smartphone CPUs have gotten so good that it becomes really hard to notice differences, even for heavy users. Yes, the newer Snapdragon 888 may have better benchmarks than the Snapdragon 865 on the 8 Pro, but I couldn’t see any differences in usability even in intense scenarios like gaming.

On the contrary, I’ve observed the OnePlus 9 Pro getting warmer much earlier than the OnePlus 8 Pro, even for normal, non-intense things. this Overheating has been reported by many users and I hope OnePlus will fix it in a future software update. But until then, the OnePlus 8 Pro and 9 Pro are practically identical in terms of performance.

Of course, this can change in 2-3 years as the older OnePlus 8 Pro will show its age sooner, but if you change your phone within the next 2-3 years anyway, I think you can use both the 8 Pro or the 9 per.

Software updates

Comparison of OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 8 Pro software updates

Let’s talk a little about software updates too, an area where OnePlus has done really badly over the past few months. To give you a quick summary, OnePlus has this track record of good software support until each model is the latest, but once the newer flagship comes out, the older model’s software updates are severely delayed. It happened with the OnePlus 8 Pro, where it got the Android 11 update in October while it was a year older OnePlus 7 Pro Got it 6 months later in March. Following this pattern, the OnePlus 8 Pro definitely does not receive the software updates at the same time as the newer 9 Pro. So keep that in mind when making your decision.

OnePlus 9 Pro vs. OnePlus 8 Pro camera comparison

Let’s talk about the cameras now! Visually, both smartphones have a quad camera setup on the back and a 16 MP front camera. The OnePlus 9 Pro has a brand new 48MP Sony IMX789 sensor as the main camera, a 50MP ultrawide, an 8MP telephoto camera with 3.3x optical zoom and a 2MP monochrome camera. On the other hand, the OnePlus 8 Pro has a 48MP Sony IMX689 sensor as the main camera, a 48MP ultrawide, an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and a 5MP color filter camera. This year, OnePlus generated a lot of hype by partnering with a well-known camera brand, Hasselblad. Hasselblad contributed to the color calibration aspect of photography for the OnePlus 9 Pro. Let’s find out how the 2021 OnePlus flagship compares to last year’s OnePlus 8 Pro.

  • Both devices have really good primary camera performance in a vacuum. Both smartphones shoot sharp images with respectable details. As soon as we place these devices side by side, the OnePlus 9 Pro makes sharper images with precise colors and an overall cooler tone. In short, the pictures taken with the 9 Pro are less high-contrast and appear a bit flatter compared to the high-contrast pictures taken with the OnePlus 8 Pro. On the one hand, the 9 Pro also captures more accurate skin tones, while the OnePlus 8 Pro, on the other hand, takes images with a warmer tone and offers better noise processing.
  • With the ultrawide camera, we achieved even better performance on the OnePlus 9 Pro. It captured detailed images with better colors, less color fringing, and industry-leading distortion correction.
  • The OnePlus 9 Pro does a little better in terms of sharpness and colors when it comes to taking pictures with the telephoto camera.
  • Macro performance is good on both devices. However, the 8 Pro has the edge as it takes pictures with more details and better noise reduction.
  • The motif separation performance is almost identical for both devices. However, the 9 Pro retains the highlights better in outdoor shots.
  • When it comes to selfies, the OnePlus 9 Pro has finally received the much-needed improvements. The 9 Pro captures skin tones with more detail and more accurate colors. Both the OnePlus 7 and 8 series struggled to get the skin tones right, but always ended up with an overly processed look.
  • Low light performance is very similar on both devices. The 9 Pro shoots brighter images with more accurate colors, while the 8 Pro shoots images with better noise processing.
  • The monochrome and filter cameras on both smartphones do a decent job. Even so, I would recommend recording with the main camera and then editing in an app to get that filter look.

  • In terms of video resolution and frame rates, the OnePlus 9 Pro gets the cake as it can record videos in up to [email protected], and in [email protected] On the other hand, the 8 Pro tops it off [email protected] from the reversing cameras.
  • In terms of video quality, both smartphones shoot sharp videos with respectable colors. In fact, a casual user will not be able to distinguish between the video quality of these two smartphones. So we took a closer look and found that the 9 Pro records slightly sharper videos with less noise and a cooler white balance in different recording environments.
  • Both devices offer a dedicated night video mode and a time-lapse mode for a better recording experience.

To sum up, both the OnePlus 8 Pro and 9 Pro have excellent hardware, with the latter offering better camera hardware, software, and color science. However, that doesn’t mean the OnePlus 8 Pro is bad. It still takes sharp pictures with excellent noise processing. If you are already using the OP 8 series, I do not recommend upgrading to the 9 series just for the “Hasseblad” camera.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a powerful flagship smartphone that takes good pictures, the OnePlus 9 Pro will be more your speed. After all, it’s the best camera ever installed on a OnePlus phone.

Battery life & charging

OnePlus 9 Pro vs. OnePlus 8 Pro battery life comparison

In terms of battery life, the OnePlus 8 Pro is surprisingly better here. Surprising to me because the OnePlus 8 Pro that I am using here is my personal phone that I use every day, which means that the battery is a bit worn compared to the fresh battery on this new OnePlus 9 Pro. And yet I manage to achieve 5.5 to 6 hours of Screen On Time with the 8 Pro, which is much better than the 4 to 4.5 hours of Screen On Time I get with the OnePlus 9 Pro. Again, this would very likely be fixed in a future software update, but before that, the OnePlus 8 Pro is simply better when it comes to endurance.

When it comes to charging, the OnePlus 9 Pro does the cake. Although both phones charge insanely fast, the OnePlus 9 Pro is significantly faster than the OnePlus 8 Pro in both wired and wireless charging. Both phones come with a charger, which is always a welcome addition in the post-iPhone 12 era.

OnePlus 8 Pro vs. Galaxy S21 Ultra

Okay, time for a few random highlights before we wrap up. The fingerprint sensor is the same on both phones, which means it’s reliable and fast. The stereo speakers on the 9 Pro sound a bit better, although the difference isn’t very big. Even the calling experience is very similar on both phones, with good clarity in the earpiece and great signal capacity.

OnePlus 9 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro which one should you buy?

Now to the conclusion. You see, the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 8 Pro are very similar phones. So much so that if you’re a OnePlus 8 Pro user, or even a 7 Pro user, there’s no point upgrading to the 9 Pro. However, if you’re in the market and you’re confused between these two phones, get the OnePlus 9 Pro. While the differences aren’t that big, you get loads of nice add-ons like faster software updates, better long-term performance, and better cameras. Little things that make a big difference.
