Pop in a fresh install! On _OS 20.04, users may be surprised because most videos on streaming sites cannot work in Firefox. This article describes how to resolve this issue.
|Cannot play video in Firefox on Pop! _OS 20.04|
If you just installed Pop! _OS 20.04 and try to play some videos in Firefox, you will notice that YouTube works normally, but for most other websites (such as Twitch, Netflix, Dailymotion, Vimeo, etc.), playing videos will not work (even Reddit, gifv files on gfycat and Imgur).
These are the Pops that I have newly installed! Error encountered when trying to play Twitch, Netflix, Dailymotion and Vimeo videos in Firefox on _OS 20.04:
- Twitch: The video is unavailable or not supported by this browser. (Error #4000)
- Netflix: Forgive the interruption. Sorry, we were unable to process your request. Error code F7355
- Dailymotion: Sorry…please update your browser or try another browser
- Vimeo: Player error. The player is in trouble. We will make it back up and run as soon as possible.
There is no error in Firefox that causes the video playback on so many video streaming websites to fail. It just lacks some codecs.
|After installing the software packages mentioned below, video playback is available in Pop! _OS running in Firefox on 20.04|
To make Firefox in Pop! _OS 20.04 to play videos on any website, you need to install
libavcodec-extra package. To do this, open a terminal and enter:
sudo apt install libavcodec-extra
libavcodec-extra The package will also pull out some dependencies, and all videos should now be in Pop! Play in the Firefox web browser running on _OS 20.04.
