Reddit is updating its camera with more video creation tools: this is new

On the trail of platforms like TikTok, Instagram Roles and YouTube Shorts, Reddit is finally tossing its hat in the battle for supremacy in short-form videos.

In an update from November 2021, the platform expanded its video creation tools. Here are the updated features that are helping Reddit video creators take the world by storm.

Reddit’s updated video creation tools

In 2020, Reddit acquired the social video creation app Dubsmash. Known for its innovative video editing capabilities, the Dubsmash acquisition has cemented the foundation for Reddit’s transition from an anonymous online forum to a short-form video-sharing platform.

Now that Reddit has incorporated many of Dubsmash’s innovative video creation tools, Reddit has added a number of updated features to its camera that allow creators to create videos in its native app.

At the heart of the additional features, the most significant change is the introduction of a new camera. Unlike before, Reddit users can now access options like changing the recording speed, setting timers, or using filters called Reddit-first lenses.

If you plan on uploading videos that you made in another free online video editor, Reddit also allows users to upload videos in landscape, portrait and fill formats. Not to mention, you can adjust and trim multiple clips at the same time.

Alternatively, while Reddit’s updated upload features are great, it might just as well be that you don’t need any other video editing apps. Similar to its competitors, users can now add, draw, apply filters, rearrange clips, and even add voice overs within the Reddit app.

The rise of new Reddit video makers

For years, Reddit has stood for its strong community of authentic, but mostly anonymous users. With this move, Reddit is opening up to a different type of demographic that doesn’t mind having a face attached to a username.

In the hope of empowering its creators to express themselves in more ways, Reddit’s updated short-form video creation tools do just that.

While only time will tell if it’s worth it, Reddit has made its venture clear with its urge for more video content. What kind of short-form video content will thrive on Reddit is unclear.
