Spotify tests TikTok-Style vertical video feed called “Explore”

episode TikTok, several large technology companies have jumped on the bandwagon of the short video platform. Instagram offers roles, YouTube offers YouTube Shorts and even Netflix and Snap have their variations of short video content. Now Spotify is preparing to join the fight.

The audio streaming giant has confirmed that it is currently testing a new Discover feature in its app. This provides users with a vertical feed of music videos to flip, like, or flip past. Discover is the fourth tab in the navigation bar at the bottom, positioned between Home and Search.

Twitter User Chris Messina told TechCrunch that he first found the feature in Spotify’s TestFlight beta build on iOS. He compared Discover to a “stripped-down version” of TikTok.

Tapping the Explore button on the navigation bar will open a video feed. You can then swipe up and down to view posts, just like on TikTok. You can also tap the heart icon to like the content. Messina noted that if you tap the three-dot menu, you can view a standard song fact sheet. He also speculated that the feature could take advantage of Spotify’s existing canvas format.

TechCrunch has confirmed that the videos that play in the vertical feed on Discover are actually existing canvas videos uploaded by artists. However, Spotify has not directly confirmed this. The streaming platform refused to provide additional details about the Discover feature, but issued a statement saying it is exploring the idea of a vertical video feed. A spokesman said:

“At Spotify, we routinely run a series of tests to improve our user experience. Some of these tests eventually pave the way for our wider user experience, others just serve as important learning tools. We don’t have any more news to share right now. “

Our opinion

Spotify appears to be in the early stages of developing the Discover feature. However, the feature may never start, just like stories Spotify has tested for YouTubers in the past.

Regardless of the uncertainties, Spotify is entering the already competitive segment of short video formats. It joins other new offerings such as NetflixFast Laughs, Snap’s Spotlight and Pinterest’s idea pins.
