The next iPhone can boast satellite communications

Apple is expected to introduce the next generation of iPhone in just over two weeks. Apple’s upcoming iPhones are expected to have a number of new features. There are a lot of rumors about what to expect from the iPhones in 2021, and a prominent Apple expert has added to the list.

Kuo said the iPhone 13 could connect directly to satellites in low earth orbit (or LEO) thanks to a modified Qualcomm X60 baseband processor. LEO satellites are best known as the backbone of Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service, which uses satellites in lower orbit to broadcast the internet to users while facing some of the common satellite internet issues like high latency and frequent outages be avoided. However, it’s unclear whether satellite functionality will be limited to certain uses, but we wouldn’t be shocked if it did. Many internet-intensive apps are not available because the mobile satellite connection is typically slower than traditional cellular data. According to Kuo, carriers must work with Globalstar, a US satellite communications company, to provide LEO connections to consumers.

Globalstar’s shares rose earlier this year as Qualcomm announced that its upcoming X65 processor will support Globalstar’s band n53 technology. In other words, a telecommunications provider can use Globalstar’s satellite service on the iPhone 13 to enable this capability for consumers.

If this report is correct, the X60 will most likely support another aspect of 5G which currently consists of a variety of technologies like millimeter wave which is super fast, but has a limited range, and C-band, which is used more often but is slower. LEO 5G would help in places where towers are not currently beaming down other types of 5G speed, which is particularly beneficial in rural areas where 3G and 4G connectivity is typically scarce. There is good reason to be skeptical. According to a 2019 Bloomberg rumor, Apple was working on satellite technology for the iPhone, but the team intended to get a product to market within five years – two years could be too early if the leaks were real at first.

No other brand has used this technology before. Many more brands are reportedly working on it but will have to wait until 2022 as Qualcomm’s X65 baseband chip won’t be available until then. Apple, which reportedly uses a Qualcomm processor, could be the first to implement this. Apple may have a bigger catch for the next iPhone than the reported display and camera improvements when it has a satellite connection.
