Voice input is one of many hidden functions of google docs that people don’t use regularly yet. Meanwhile, the few users who know, can’t use it successfully. So, if you can’t get voice typing working in Google Docs, we have some solutions to help you fix it in this post.
Reloading the Google Docs tab or restarting the browser could fix the problem. If nothing changes and Google Docs voice input still doesn’t work when you restart your browser, try the troubleshooting checks we recommend below.
1. Switch to Chrome
If you can’t find the Voice Typing option in the Google Docs Tools section, it is most likely that you are using an unsupported browser. Here’s the thing: when you don’t use it Google Chrome, you are missing out on some of the best features in Google Docs. A good example is the offline input. And you really can’t blame Google for wanting to keep some of their best cherries on their tree.
2. Check the website’s microphone access
The first time you use the voice input feature Chrome, you may be asked to give the website (i.e. Google Docs) access to the microphone on your PC or Mac. Click on Allow. If you can’t remember whether you gave Google Docs microphone access or maybe you accidentally clicked Deny, there is a way to check and fix the problem.
Step 1: Tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner of Chrome and select Settings.
Step 2: Go to the “Privacy and Security” section.
Step 3: Select Site Settings.
Step 4: Scroll to the Permissions section and select Microphone.
Step 5: You can check that Google Docs (https://docs.google.com) is in the Allow section.
With Google Docs in the blocks section, skip to step 6 to give access to the site microphone.
Step 6: Click on Google Docs (https://docs.google.com:443).
Step 7: Tap the Microphone drop-down button and select Allow.
Return to the Google Docs page and see if the voice typing works now.
If you’ve connected an external device with a built-in microphone to your computer, you should also check that the device is the active microphone that is being used by. is used Chrome. On Chrome’s Microphone Settings page (see step 4 above), tap the Default drop-down button.
Now select the device that you want to use as the default microphone for voice input.
You shouldn’t select the microphone until after you’ve verified that it’s working properly.
3. Check Chrome’s microphone access
Another thing that you want to confirm is that Google Chrome (not just Google Docs) has permission to use your computer’s microphone or other connected microphones.
Check ChromeMicrophone authorization under Windows
Step 1: Launch the Windows Settings menu and select Privacy.
Step 2: In the App Permissions section (in the menu on the left), select Microphone.
Step 3: Make sure the “Allow apps to access your microphone” option is checked.
Step 4: Also, scroll to the bottom of the page and toggle the “Allow desktop apps to access your microphone” option.
Check ChromeMicrophone permission on the Mac
Step 1: Start the System Preferences and select “Security & Privacy”.
Step 2: Navigate to the Privacy section and select Microphone.
Step 3: Confirm that Google Chrome is checked.
if Google Chrome isn’t on the list of apps in the Microphone section, try speaking in Google Docs and look for a confirmation prompt like the one below. Tap OK to continue.
if Google Chrome Still not showing up on the microphone permissions page, you’ll need to reinstall the browser on your Mac.
4. Adjust the microphone volume
Voice input may not work optimally if the microphone volume on your device is muted or too low. If you’re using an external microphone with a dedicated microphone volume button or slider, turn up the volume and try speaking again. Alternatively, you can increase the microphone volume via the settings menu on your PC. Here is how.
Adjust microphone volume in Windows
Step 1: Start Settings and select System.
Step 2: In the Sound menu, scroll to the Input section and select your preferred input device (read: microphone) from the list of available devices. Then click on Device Properties.
Step 3: Drag the microphone volume slider to the right to increase the volume.
Adjust microphone volume on Mac
Step 1: Launch System Preferences and select Sound.
Step 2: Navigate to the Input tab and select the default / preferred input device.
Step 3: Finally, move the input volume slider to the right to increase the microphone volume.
More troubleshooting options
If all efforts to get voice typing working have failed, try clearing Chrome’s cache or delete all data from the browser. Using voice input in a quiet environment can also minimize problems. Better yet, get a noise-canceling microphone.
