The final beta version of Ubuntu 21.04 has been officially released. It features images of Ubuntu desktops, servers, and cloud products, as well as Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, UbuntuKylin, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, and Xubuntu flavors.
Ubuntu 21.04 Codename “Hirsute Hippo”. As a non-LTS release, support is only 9 months.
In addition to Linux Kernel 5.11 and GNOME 3.38.x, the new Ubuntu edition comes with several GNOME 40 core applications such as GNOME Calculator, Gnome Clocks, and Gnome Disk Utility.
Then log in to your Wayland session by default. If your application hasn’t been updated with Wayland support before, you can easily return to your X11 session by clicking the gear button while the login screen is displayed.
Another change is that the time and date menus, system tray menus, notifications, and other top panel drop-down menus are now in dark mode. If you prefer either standard mode or light mode, you need to install the user theme Gnome Shell Extension and change the default theme to light. See this tutorial for more information.
Other changes are as follows:
- Use nftables as the default backend for your firewall.
- Add support for smart card authentication
- Desktop icons are now handled by the Desktop Icons NG extension, which supports drag and drop.
- Pipe wire support is now enabled.
- Updated toolchains, applications and more.
