Ubuntu’s Yaru theme gets official support for Xfce

Yaru, The default Ubuntu (GNOME) GTK theme, has been updated and added Xfce (Xfwm4). This is how it looks and how to try it now.

this PR Yesterday, the Yaru GTK theme was merged to add Xfce support and tested on Xubuntu 21.04. On Xfce, Yaru is available in light and dark versions (GTK and window decorations), both of which use the dark Xfce panel (but in the light version with a light panel menu):

I also tried Yaru for Xfce on Xubuntu 20.04, and I did not find any problems in my brief use (the screenshots in this article were taken on Xubuntu 20.04 LTS).

Yaru that supports Xfce may be available in Ubuntu (Xubuntu) 21.10, which will be released on October 14, 2021.

If you want to try Yaru for Xfce immediately, you can install the latest Yaru From Git. It is important to note that by following the instructions below, your current Yaru installation will be overwritten (and it can be overwritten by any updates to the Yaru theme in the official repository) if you install it!

You need to install git, meson, sassc, libglib (development header files) and libxml2-utils to build Yaru.

For example, on Debian/Xbuntu (using the Xfce desktop), you can install them with the following command:

sudo apt install git meson sassc libglib2.0-dev libxml2-utils

Spin on Fedora Xfce:

sudo dnf install git meson sassc glib2-devel libxml2

Arch Linux / Manjaro with Xfce:

sudo pacman -S git meson sassc libxml2

Then, you can use Xfce support to build and install the latest Yaru from Git (GTK, icons, sounds, cursor themes, etc.):

git clone https://github.com/ubuntu/yaru

cd yaru

meson build -Dxfwm4=true

sudo ninja -C build install

If you want to update to the latest Git, rebuild and reinstall it, delete build Folder from yaru Directory, and then use the terminal to navigate to yaru Folder, run git pull Get the latest Git and re-run meson Sudo ninja The above command.

To change GTK and window border themes in Xfce, please open the settings and go to:

  • Appearance -> Style Tab to change GTK theme
  • Window manager -> Style Tab for changing window decoration theme

In both cases, you can change the theme to Yaru or Yaru-dark. If you install it according to the above instructions, you will also have the Yaru icon theme on your Xfce desktop, so you can also use it as needed.
