RTV It is Reddit’s terminal user interface (TUI), which can be used to log in to your Reddit account, use external tools to open media, etc. The console application is built using Python and curses libraries and can run on Linux and Mac.
Use it so that the boss will not know what you are doing, because you do most of the work on the command line anyway, because it is fast and lightweight, or just because it is cool.
RTV (Reddit Terminal Viewer) features include:
- Browse Reddit without logging in or authenticating the application through your Reddit account (OAuth)
- Easily browse the homepage, jump to your favorite sub-bookmarks, open user pages, browse multiple bookmarks, search Reddit, etc.
- After logging in, you can write new Reddit posts or comments, edit or delete comments and submissions, save the submission, view the child Reddit and check for new messages
- Open the media in the preferred application
- Clipboard supports copying the submit link to the clipboard (required
- Support themes (with daylighting dark and light colors, Papercolor, Molokai and Colorblind Dark themes and monochrome themes)
|RTV: comment section + open YouTube video with mpv|
For commenting and creating new posts, Reddit Terminal Viewer uses your default command line editor, such as Nano, Vim, etc.
Although the application is powerful, it lacks something. An important feature missing from RTV is the ability to read and reply to comments. Now, it can only notify you that you have a new message, and will not display any information about this message. Another missing feature is that it does not comply with the Reddit label, so the spoiler can be seen.
RTV demo is available on it Project page.
Install and configure RTV (Reddit Terminal Viewer)
RTV may be available in your Linux distribution repository, so the first thing you need to do is perform a search and see if you can install it from there. RTV is located in Debian Stretch, buster and sid repositories, and Ubuntu 18.04 18.10 and 19.04 / Linux Mint 19 and 19. *. To install it, you can use:
sudo apt install rtv
The console application is also available in Fedora 28, but it is not available in Fedora 29 (I am not sure why). You can install it using the following methods:
sudo dnf install rtv
On RTV Project page You will find installation instructions for installing it on macOS, Arch Linux, etc., as well as PyPi installation instructions for any Linux distribution.
After installing Reddit Terminal Viewer, you may need to change some of its settings. To do this, run the following command to create its user profile:
Now you will find a file called
~/.config/rtv. Use a text editor to open this file, and then change the settings to meet your needs. In this file, you can set the default subreddit so that RTV can use the program defined in the mailcap configuration to open external links (see below), change the theme or keyboard binding, and so on.
In order to be able to use external tools to open the images in the video, please use the following command to create a mailcap configuration file:
This will create a file called
.mailcap (Hidden file) in your home directory. By default, feh and mpv (if not installed, please install them, unless you want to change them, please use them) to open external media, but you can edit it
~/.mailcap Documentation to change this.
Now run RTV:
u log in. Adopt
↓ Moving up and down. Press
