VirtualBox 6.1.12 Released With New GLX Graphics Output

Oracle Virtualbox 6.1.12 was released a day ago as the sixth maintenance release in the 6.1 series.

Highlights of the Oracle Virtualbox 6.1.12 release:

  • Fixed UI of Log-Viewer search-backward icon
  • BusLogic SCSI controller emulation fixes and improvements
  • Fix regression in FIFO data processing
  • Experimental new type of network connection. You can make your local VM act as if it were running in the cloud.
  • Improved resource management for guest control functions
  • Corrected command option analysis of “Edit Snapshot” subcommand
  • Fixed a crash in “VBox Manage internal commands repair hd” when handling invalid input.
  • Add Guest:
    • New experimental 3D GLX graphics output
    • Fixed releasing texture objects that could cause guest crashes
    • Fixed an issue where writing to a file on a shared folder was not reflected on the host if the file was mmap and the Linux kernel used was between versions 4.10.0 and 4.11.x
    • Fix 32-bit Windows 8+ shared folder driver to flush error writing to memory-mapped file in rare circumstances returns error
    • Improve resize coverage of VMS VGA graphics controller
    • Fixed issue with detecting guest add ISO at runtime
    • Fixed German translation encoding in Windows GA installer

If you have already added the Oracle apt repository for Linux, install the update via Software Updater.

Or run the following commands one at a time to add the apt repository:

1. Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), paste the following command and run it to add the repository.

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian $(lsb_release -sc) contrib" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list'

For Linux Mint, it needs to be replaced $(lsb_release -sc) By command bionic For Mint 19.x, or xenial For Mint 18.x, or focal For Linux Mint 20.

2. Then use the command to download and install the repository key.

wget -q https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

3. Update the system package cache with the command.

sudo apt update

4. Finally install Virtualbox 6.1.

sudo apt install virtualbox-6.1

Uninstall:

To remove it, run the command in terminal:

sudo apt remove --autoremove virtualbox-6.1

Then go to Software & Updates -> Other Software and delete the apt repository.
