Wine 5.4 with Unicode 13 support has been released [How to Install]

Wine 5.4 was released as the latest development release a few days ago. The official apt repository has created packages for all current Ubuntu releases.

Wine 5.4 Released with the following changes:

  • Unicode data has been updated to Unicode version 13.
  • Embedded programs use the new UCRTBase C runtime.
  • Better support for internationalized domain names.
  • Support for drawing rounded rectangles in Direct2D.
  • Text drawing with D3DX9.
  • Various bug fixes.

How to install Wine 5.4 on Ubuntu:

Open a terminal by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T on your keyboard or searching for “terminal” from the application menu. When opened, execute the following commands one by one.

1.) Execute the command to enable the 32-bit architecture (if not already done):

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Enter your user password (without asterisk feedback) when prompted and press Enter to continue.

2.) Download and install the keyring using the command.

wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key; sudo apt-key add winehq.key

3.) Add wine repository with command (for Ubuntu 19.10):

sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ eoan main'

Note: You can replace eoan in your code with:

  • Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19.x bionic
  • Xenial on Ubuntu 16.04 and Linux Mint 18.x

4.) Add the required PPA libfaudio0 library:

Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19.x only, like Ubuntu 19.10 libfaudio0 The universe repository and Wine for Ubuntu 16.04 do not require the libfaudio0 library.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cybermax-dexter/sdl2-backport

5.) Finally, install Wine 5.4 using the command.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-devel

Note: Installing the latest development release automatically removes the stable version (if installed).

Also, for any unresolved dependency issues with 32-bit library installation, run the following command:

sudo apt-get install libgnutls30:i386 libldap-2.4-2:i386 libgpg-error0:i386 libxml2:i386 libasound2-plugins:i386 libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 libfreetype6:i386 libdbus-1-3:i386 libsqlite3-0:i386

(Optional) After successfully installing Wine 5.4, you can launch the Software & Updates utility, go to the Other Software tab, and delete the PPA.
