Wine 6.9 has been released! How to install on Ubuntu 21.04, 20.04

Wine, a free open source implementation for running Windows apps on Linux, released version 6.9 last night. Here’s how to install it on Ubuntu 21.04, Ubuntu 20.10, Ubuntu 20.04, Ubuntu 18.04.

Wine 6.9 A new development release with the following features:

  • The WPCAP library has been converted to PE.
  • Support for paper forms in the print spooler.
  • More math functions from Musl in the C runtime.

There are also many bug fixes for Windows apps such as TroopMaster, Visual C ++ 2010, Overwatch and The Sims 2.

How to install Wine 6.9 on Ubuntu:

Wine has its own apt repository for Ubuntu and Linux Mint based systems. Open the terminal from the system app launcher. Once open, run the following commands one at a time.

1.) Run the command to enable the 32-bit architecture (if you don’t have one).

                      sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Enter your user password (without asterisk feedback) when prompted and press Enter to continue.

2.) Execute the following command to install the repository key.

                      wget -O - | sudo apt-key add -

3.) Add the wine repository using the command.

                      sudo apt-add-repository 'deb focal main'

Important: This command requires you to replace the focal with:

  • Focuses on Ubuntu 20.04, Linux Mint 20.x
  • Groovy for Ubuntu 20.10.
  • Hypertrichosis in Ubuntu 21.04.
  • Bionic for Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19.x

Don’t know the edition of the system?Run lsb_release -a Run the command in the terminal to check out.

4.) For Ubuntu 18.04 and Linux Mint 19.x only, you need the libfaudio0 library to run the following command to install from a third-party repository.

                      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cybermax-dexter/sdl2-backport

5.) Finally, use the command to install Wine 6.9.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-devel

If the dependency issue is not met, try the aptitude command instead.

sudo apt install aptitude && sudo aptitude install winehq-devel

Are you experiencing dependency issues that haven’t been met yet? Try running the command to manually install the missing library. This command worked on my Ubuntu 20.04.

                      sudo apt-get install libgnutls30:i386 libldap-2.4-2:i386 libgpg-error0:i386 libxml2:i386 libasound2-plugins:i386 libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 libfreetype6:i386 libdbus-1-3:i386 libsqlite3-0:i386

Uninstall wine.

[ソフトウェアとアップデート]Launch the utility and[その他のソフトウェア]You can delete the PPA by navigating to the tab.
